The Fate of Giants (2021)

  • Documentary
  • 20min

Kauri are one of the largest and oldest living organisms on earth and they may vanish forever with the onset of Kauri Dieback disease. The last of our greatest natural treasures are rapidly disappearing.

The Fate of Giants is an exploration of Kauri ecology and the role this giant tree plays in forest ecosystems. The film explores natural history and cultural perceptions, expressing the life-force of this magnificent tree so that people can understand it better and see the forest in a different way. Weaving stories from Māori scientists, mingling the concepts to show how they compliment our understanding of the environment, this film takes us on a journey with the tree’s lifecycle and its imminent threat of death from the rampant disease that is wiping out the last remaining forest giants.
