For Joan is the story of 22-year old Joan on the day she procures a backyard abortion. Told in a non-linear fashion, the film moves between; the couple who performed the abortion, driving down a dirt road and listening to the radio; Joan and her boyfriend Alan and their last conversation together in the morning; the moments before the procedure itself; and finally, Alan waiting in an alley late at night, eventually realising that Joan isn’t coming to meet him, for she didn’t make it. The film is intercut with a long montage of various suburban backyards following the reveal of Joan’s passing.
